How to Choose a Motorcycle Top Case: Capacity, Material and Fitting Guide
How to choose a motorcycle top case: capacity, material and fitting guide from Jiangmen GF - 5L to 65L aluminium top cases, wholesale and OEM.

A practical buyer's guide from Jiangmen GF moto tail box manufacturer - covering the 5L to 65L aluminium range.
Why Your Choice of Top Case Matters
A top case is more than a box on the back of your motorcycle. It carries your daily essentials, protects your gear from weather and theft, and changes how your bike looks and handles. Choose the right one and you barely notice it is there; choose the wrong one and you fight the width in traffic or ride with a case that is always half empty.
This guide walks through the three decisions that matter most: capacity, material and construction, and the mounting system.
Step 1: Pick the Right Capacity
Top case capacity is measured in litres, and the right number depends on what you carry and how far you ride.
Small: 5L - the mini top case. Around 18 x 18 x 17 cm, a 5L case holds a wallet, phone, tools and small daily essentials. It is the natural choice for mini motorcycles, scooters and e-bikes, where a large box would overwhelm the machine's proportions.
Medium: 18L - the compact case. At 38 x 29 x 20 cm, an 18L case adds genuine storage without dominating a smaller bike - a popular size for riders who want secure everyday capacity with a low-profile look.
Large: 45L to 65L - the touring range. The 45L (44 x 36 x 32 cm) is the compact touring size with an efficient interior; the 55L (47.5 x 42 x 35 cm) adds extended-touring capacity; the 65L is the largest in the range, for long-distance riders who carry a full set of gear.
A simple rule: measure what you actually carry, add room for growth, and resist buying more capacity than your riding needs - a half-empty case looks as unbalanced as an overloaded one.
Step 2: Choose the Right Material and Construction
Most top cases are aluminium alloy or plastic, and the difference shows up in three places: strength, security and long-term looks.
Strength and durability. A 1.2 mm aluminium alloy shell with a powder-coated finish resists impacts, weather and UV far better than most plastics, which can fade and become brittle over years outdoors.
Security. Metal construction pairs naturally with stronger hardware - our cases use stainless steel locks on both the lid and the base.
Looks. Powder-coated aluminium in black or silver keeps its finish for years, available flat or with embossed X panelling for extra visual character. Quality cases also pair the metal shell with a waterproof gasket that seals the lid against rain and dust.
Step 3: Check the Mounting System
The best case is useless if it wobbles or takes an afternoon to remove.
Look for a quick-release, plug & play mounting system: a base plate stays on the bike, and the case clicks on and off in seconds. This lets you take the case with you when parking, and swap it between bikes that share the same plate.
Check that the mounting hardware is included and that the lock system covers both the lid and the base plate - two points of security instead of one.
Step 4: Consider Customization for Your Fleet or Brand
If you are a dealer, distributor or fleet operator, customization matters as much as the spec sheet. Available OEM options typically include LOGO printing, color, corner design, embossing, wrinkle finish embossing and sticker design - so the cases arrive matching your brand rather than a factory standard.
